Luc Lafortune is the first and most famous lighting designer of the Cirque du Soleil
Luc has created the lighting design for many shows such as: O, Le Cirque Réinventé, Fascination, Nouvelle Expérience, Saltimbanco, Mystère, Alegrìa, Quidam, La Nouba, Dralion, Varekai, Zumanity, Ka.
He is also the scenographer of famous rock star such as Eagles, Gipsy Kings, Peter Gabriel.

You will find below Luc Lafortune's declaration about his conference at SIEL 2013 :
“As far as content for the seminars goes, I'd would like to discuss the notion of premise for design by quoting two examples that are different of each other, O and Ka.
This was the first time that I was working from a script, and the Director, who was classically trained, favoured a more traditional and academic approach.
Consequently, I had to revisit my entire approach. Essentially, I determined a method by which I could go about designing in my usual, and more familiar way while still being able to communicate my ideas to the Director, in a language that he was more accustomed to. Being classically trained, the director relied more on words, whereas I relied more on Imagery, which would only seem to make sense given the visual nature our my craft.
So, I created a glossary of words that I thought might capture the essence of the various scenes and characters, words like Ephemeral, or monolithic, to name only a few. I then organized these words according to the various scenes as defined by the script. And from this list, I did an image search, for each and every word.
The images I collected were then organized in the same manner and order as the various scenes.
Essentially, I replaced the script with a series of images. And from these images, I was able to make specific choices with regards to the actual lighting, meaning colour, texture and so forth.
So, I guess the lecture will centre around this notion of design and where our inspiration and motivation might come from.
Though this approach became a reality during the creation of Ka, it takes root during the creation of O, directed by Franco Dragone."
